The percentage of prisoners in federal facilities is much smaller than those in state custody though. At the state level it's around 50% in for violent crimes and 20% for drugs.

Federally operated facilities increased by 21%, from 84 in 2000 to 102 in 2005. State operated facilities grew by 9%, from 1,584 to 1,719 during this period.

In 2005 there were an estimated 687,700 state prisoners serving time for a violent offense. State prisons also held an estimated 248,900 property offenders and 253,300 drug offenders.
