They've blown up US ships and committed major espionage in the US without that relationship being destroyed. ============================== It wouldn't be destroyed, but the US-Israel relationship would likely be as strained as at any time since the Suez invasion in 1954.

Let's recall that the USS Liberty was attacked (and covered up) during the Six Day War in 1967, when the Western image of Israel as a plucky David standing up to the Arab Goliath was as portrayed in the movie Exodus. This was before the brutal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the rise of the Palestinian national movement, much greater global awareness of the real roots of the century-long conflict, and the subsequent emergence of right-wing and religious forces at the forefront of a once secular and leftish Israeli society widely admired by Western liberals and even young leftists.

Today, unlike in 1967, the Obama administration, rather than giving the green light to a preemptive Israeli strike by the Netanyahu government would almost certainly treat it as an act of defiance and be forced to distance itself in the interest of US foreign policy. This would contribute to a climate of public opinion which would be conducive, IMO, to the largest mass demonstrations in the US and Europe since the buildup to the Iraq invasion - including within a growing segment of the American-Jewish community.

I doubt, though, we'll be presented with the opportunity to to test this proposition.
