Yeesh, doesn't anybody watch The Simpsons? "Won't somebody please think of the children?" It's what the reverend's wife, Helen Lovejoy, shrieks when things are getting out of control and she wants them to be back in order. In a way, it's about what shag said, but I was thinking less about there being no one in control than the appeal to some thing posited outside of politics (children, electricity) for whose sake it is imperative that we return to the way things were. I was also short of time, IIRC. As I am now, which is why I will get back to shag's questions later. Despite my hit-and-run style lately, I really am interested in talking about these things. I won't, however, do it on Doug's grounds; his obsession with reducing everything to big vs. small/local vs. global is not my obsession.
