Karma, pure karma. From 1975-2001, neoliberalism (a.k.a. the class war of the rich on the planet) plundered, pillaged, looted and burned the periphery and semi-periphery. At least seventy countries, 60% of humanity, were immiserated by structural adjustment. Tens of millions perished, starved, died from lack of medical care, potable water, etc. Historians will shudder when they tally up the body county. And the last act of the neoliberal wrecking ball hits home... in the US, pulverizing the homes, pensions, savings and jobs of Americans who thought their fealty to Empire would always pay the bills.

Americans have to choose between militant, nonviolent mass social movements (and don't ask me what these will look like -- I'm a media critic, not a prophet) -- and post-Soviet-style collapse. Left to his own ideological devices, Obama seems bound and determined to be America's Gorbachev -- only one without the sense to get the hell out of Afghanistan.
