Ugh. That was a really dumb mistake. There is still a major rise though:

1960: 160.9/100K 2002: 494.6/100K

peak in 1991 at 758.2/100K

It's interesting that murders are essentially the same in 1960 and 2002 (5.1 v. 5.6) That makes me wonder if there is some methodological jimmying going on here: most murders probably get counted, but rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults probably don't.
