One other thing. The claim that science grew out of materialism (meaning here, I suppose, "rejection of the supernatural," whatever supernatural means) is post-Enlightenment-era bullshit. Not only were most early materialist philosophers and scientists, such as Hobbes, emphatically theists -- indeed, what would be called today "fundamentalists" -- or even primarily theologians, like that Newton guy, even before them medieval scientists only invoked "God dunnit" in limit instances where inquiry could no longer proceed. Such as, "where did the universe come from." Not by coincidence, the same exact place where modern science says "that's just the way it is."
