Frank Luntz did some focus grouping back in the early 90s, I think, that
showed people had less positive associations with "Democrat" than
"Democratic." Newt Gingrich took this and a bunch of other findings from the
lab and sent out a memo; the rest, like the Republican Party itself, is
history.
