But the pedophilia panic peddlers conflate these two all the time. Think of
the whole weird hoo-hah over female teachers who have slept with their
pubescent male students, starting with Mary Kay Le Tourneau. Dateline rakes
in the cash by presenting shockumentaries portraying these women as sick and
twisted. Leno rakes in the cash by making jokes about how lucky the boys
are. And then we hear stories like the one about the "sex offender" in
Texas who was convicted for sleeping with his 17-year-old girlfriend when he
was 19 (the girlfriend to whom he is now married), and who remains on the
public registry of sex offenders. I don't believe for a second that this
moral panic is driven by good, normal, decent people who would never think
of having such desires being repulsed by the preternaturally repulsive doing
repulsive things. This is driven by people who can't deal with their normal
share of kink who need to conjure the monsters of their own imaginations in
order to convince themselves that the weirdness is all outside them.
