Open borders isn't specifically leftist. It could just as well be a libertarian slogan: free markets work better with labor mobility, and AFAIK the combination was much more common in the pre-1914 "golden age". Comparative advantage and all that, some countries have too many people, others will soon have too few.
On the other hand Ron Paul is not a libertarian on this point, being on the closed borders side. So possibly in the US, at least, you cold use this as a leftist rallying cry.
