Tilottima Rajan in her history of "Thoery" has two interesting points that may be relevant here.

The first is that the French thinkers spoke of "Theory" rather than philosophy because they wished to hide their debt to Sartre.

The second is that they misunderstood Sart4re on Heidegger; they charged that he misconstrued Heidegger when in fact he merely disagreed with Heidegger.
