If anyone thinks that "socialist realism" is anything but the most
abject philistinism he should find an old Melodiya recording (nobody
has performed those hack works since the death of Stalin) of *On Guard
for Peace" or "Song of the Forests," composed by Prokofiev and
Shostakovich under threat of imprisonment in the Gulag or worse.
