Here's one little example: it's possible to go through K-12, 5 years of college, and 8 years of graduate school in major humanities programs, and not read, or be taught, one novel, film, or work of media by anyone from the industrializing countries (a.k.a. 80% of the planet).
I know, because it happened to me. The one exception: I took a class on Fifth Generation Chinese film. One class in 25 years.
