My impression was that for the most part, socialist realism shut down most
of the interesting artistic production in the Soviet Union until Kruschev
opened things up a bit in the 50's. Certainly, Eisenstein didn't profit
from the expectations contained in it, and the Vertov film I saw from the
era was difficult watching to say the least. Literature also took a
pretty serious hit (Babel, Bulgakov and others could no longer produce
literature). Charles may have a point that it lead to some interesting
material in the United States, but as far as I can tell, it was primarily
damaging to Soviet art. (If there are some interesting literary works or
films during this era, I would definitely be interested in finding out
about them... beyond the films that Eisenstein managed to get out at the
