engage can mean "interview so as to know what they actually do and the kinds of things they think..." sometimes its called good research practice for those doing politicized research, sometimes it means that your critique actually applies to the people you think it does, or lets you know what the particular diversity of perspective held by folks you're commenting on.

And, to all - once again, my problem's not with the basic argument. I want to know what he thinks he's doing by, or if he's thought at all of the politics of, making an argument that comes off this way to folks who'd otherwise be receptive, much less to those less likely to be receptive but who you'd think he's looking for common cause with.
