[lbo-talk] Negawatts instead of megawatts

Shane: James seems not to have read either the quotes he has posted--which hail the stoppage of the *proposed* coal-fired station and the recognition that the days of building new coal-fired power stations are over, but say nothing at all about "shutting down" existying stations--nor my mailing which said nothing about the (entirely praiseworthy) environmentalist protesters but did point out that an increase of a mere $1 (equivalent) per day per year in unemployment benefit and wages would pay for the *entire* utility bill after the 10 years of increases that would increase its annual cost to the £2000 that would presumably reflect the real cost of electrticity production.

Somebody: What's this about adhering to the real cost of electricity production? Since when is it a socialist principle to make workers pay the real costs for things? Granted I know you're not a supporter of Castro's Cuba, but do you support the reform to scrap the ration book and make people there pay the real costs for rice and meat instead of receiving them for free? In which case I guess we could say that you're a Raulista!

Seriously, though, we see this all the time when whenever discussions about energy arise. So, again, nuclear power is disparaged because of the massive government subsidies involved. What? So, the left is opposed to government subsidies as a matter of principle?
