At the present time the working class does not exist as a class, and to speak of being distracted from its struggles (which are only class struggle in Postone's terms, as the health of capitalism) is simply silly.
^^^^ CB: Small modification: At present, in the US, the working class exists as a class _in itself_. It does not exist as a class _for itself_.
The existence of the working class and capitalist class are objective conditions in capitalism. In order to end capitalism, the working class must gain working class and socialist consciousness. The US working class is hugely class and socialist _un_conscious, due to decades of brainwashing and propaganda by the capitalist class ( which is hugely class conscious).
To be a class for itself, the US working class must become class and socialist conscious, which includes proletarian internationalist.
