You make some good points Shag. Clearly there are both economic and cultural considerations at work here. Still, it's interesting that even among the college attending population men drop out more, and among those with at least bachelor's degrees, women far outnumber men in graduate programs. Putting aside low income groups for a moment, it's striking to me how, even among young people of upper middle class backgrounds, women tend to get their master's degrees in a wide range of fields at higher rates than their male peers. I think we haven't seen the full effects of this growing trend yet - but in the end, it may be that women are going to eventually overcome their historical disadvantage and become economically dominant in this country. Just as some nations in the global south are emerging from beneath the stagnating old industrial powers, so are women gradually supplanting men right under their noses. Capitalism is going to look a lot darker and more
feminine in the future.
