I'm surprised I didn't bring it up before, but I found Joesph M. Schwartz's handled these topics in *The Future of Democratic Equality* far more more soberly than WBM. (He is also an active member, self-identified member of the left) I have some (minor) political differences with him, but the overarching themes are good. List contributor Chris M reviewed it here: http://theactivist.org/blog/splitting-difference . The first half that criticizes the absence of attentiveness to structural inequality in contemporary ‘left’ political theory and lays out a critique of the "politics of difference". The second half attempts to prove that “globalization” does not make a radical egalitarian (read: socialist) project impossible. I also recommend his first book, which I just got through http://www.amazon.com/Permanence-Political-Joseph-M-Schwartz/dp/0691033579/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

Also, Timothy Brennon's *Wars of Position *is quite good (gets a little repetitive, probably no need to read it cover to cover).
