ha. i kinda figured that the whole point of embracing michaels' work *was* precisely to preserve the province of declaring that, no matter what, there *is* such a thing as an objective timeless source for making judgments of taste. which is what michaels unabashadly says in the end of his book: there are some things that taste better than others. there are some products and fashions that are superior. there are habits and ways of life that are superior. there's no dispute. it's not cultural. it's not subjective. it is the way it is. how it got that way, he doesn't say, but it is one of his final points in a book where that final point doesn't need to be said in order to have made his case. still, he found a way to say it.

what an old mentor used to say when analyzing a text: ask what the author is afraid of.

michaels is afraid of relativism, i think.
