Well that's a totally different phenomenon. The high figure for wells is precisely because depth is not limited, and usually hitting the water table eventually is like hitting the ground. It's hard to miss.

Your experience sounds easily replicable and testable -- you using the method vs. you guessing without wires vs. you doing it every 50 ft. It would make a fun paper. Now if only there was a incentive... :-)
