i could crack a joke----yeah, you got the correct or missing link..   here's a brief 'review'.    1. maybe someone should have given marx an academic job? one can follow niall ferguson and do counterfactual (if that is what it is called) history.    2. that is interesting history, but i wouldnt be surprised some would give a diffrent acount.    i dont think marx was a scientific genius; i think he fleshed out the arguments of the levelers and other pamphleteers (many of whom were the oppressed).   similarily, many say darwin (and even einstein) basically wrote down what others were saying.  but that counts.      its also possible the physiocrats and related stuff you didnt go into---though likely they basically were outside (or cut off from) the loop of 'real economics' (as is the case now for 'heterodoxes').    3.  to be real 'negative'', i'd say i cannot for the life of me see why this deserves a trip to turkey----dont those people have email or are they still in the stone ages?  you got people doing fundraisers for the 'underpriveledged' so they can get pencikls for school, meanwhile  people are asking 'how can we engage the asses'.   go where they are----buy em a book.  have them sit with you while you read the books; and have them write one too---you have a CV and tenure    and you've probably been to europe or eurasia before.      this is like chomsky in Boston Review at the Brecht forum---i wonder who exactly went there (probably not the harlem kids shooting each other).  'there is a crisis supposedly, but the people in india are starving, and they gave 1 trillion to the banks, and only 1 billion to the poor.   and now i'm going to go to the 'crisis in linguistics conference', maybe have a nice lunch in the conference center restaurant".
