my mother, a nurse, went to a meeting last night. in her state, VT, they 
are getting together to push for a single payer system in VT. She says they 
are fed up with Obama, Baucus, etc. and figure nothing will ever happen at 
the federal government level, so they'll start at the state level. being a 
nurse, this was a meeting among health care professionals, part of a larger 
network of Vertmonters, who are organizing for a single payer system.

my mother hasn't been politically involved since the early 80s!

she's long been a propenent of european models, though, ever since she 
became a nurse 22 years ago.
