As I recall, and it's been a long long time, the choice of "lifestyle" was a way to join one's individual psychology to the broader society. Through a lifestyle, one affiliated with a subculture that matched one's internal predilections - kind of like Freud's ego ideal, which was (unconsciously) chosen in a way appropriate to one's "family, class, and nation." And, like Erikson's notion of identity, which also joined the psyche to society. And maybe like Bourdieu's habitus to some extent too?

Of course, there are also the Bush Tetras: "This isn't any life/it's just a stupid lifestyle."
