Also I should say that nothing is so 2000s in music than being crushed by the weight of 1970s and 1980s musical legend, and like a lot of people, thanks to the internet I probably discovered twice as much great old stuff as I did new stuff.
Anyway, here's my top eleven with favourite releases in brackets. Not a single guitar band as it happens.

Sublime Frequencies (this is a label rather than a band, though it's the label of the band Sun City Girls, and has released a ton of weird and wonderful radio collages and field recordings from all over the world - Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra, Radio Palestine)
Missy Elliot (Under Construction) - would also represent hip hop with Outkast but they're kind of on the cusp with the 1990s
