BTW, the trigger for this interview is a Joni Mitchell drag act by a performance artist/counter-tenor named John Kelly that is absolutely brilliant. I can't recommend highly enough it especially if you ever loved Joni Mitchell when you were young. It's an amazing experience to see the drag transformation before your eyes, as it were -- a wonderful commingling of mockery and adoration that is like a restaging of your own youth. And he can really fucking sing.
At one point someone yelled from the audience "Play 'They Paved Paradise!'" And Kelly-Mitchell just coagulated before yout eyes into pained weariness. And s/he said, with an air of monumental seriousness, "It's so hard being an artist. A musical artist most of all. I mean, no one ever said to Van Gogh, 'Hey Man, paint Starry Starry Night again, man.'"
It brought the house down.
