The old New Republic from the pre-Peretz days was a damned good progressive magazine.
I remember once sitting in the library going through back issues from the early 1970s, and I was struck by the fact that in those days it regularly published by articles from fairly radical people. It used to publish people like Andrew Kopkind for instance/ I can't imagine its current incarnation doing that sort of thing. I am not sure that even the Nation would do that sort of thing now a days.
