There is a man hoist by his own petard. He was American's leading gay Republican when he all but single-handedly decided to invent gay marriage as an issue because -- unbelievable as it might seem now -- he thought it would conservatize gays and reconcile conservatives to them.
Didn't turn out that way. Made him rethink his allegiances somewhat.
