Michael Smith: "I've always thought stupidity should not be understood as
the mere absence of intelligence, but a distinct faculty in its
own right -- a quality which can even coexist with intelligence"
[WS:] Yes, indeed. Stupidity is not mere ignorance or absence of knowledge
- it is active refusal to accept knowledge, or at least certain kinds of
it. As such it is learned behavior. People learn to be stupid when
stupidity is consistently rewarded by their parents, peers and superiors.
