SA: "I read the essay a long time ago and liked it. It didn't just deal with Labour and the unions, but also with immigration and other issues."

[WS:] Yes - and it reiterates the point that is worth repeating over and over again - the British labor's strategy decision to concentrate on wages rather than structural reforms of the system (in contrast to Sweden) turned out to be a grave strategic error that cost labor the war. Fitch (Solidarity for Sale) makes a somewhat similar point about US trade unionism, and afaik, Australia's labor fell into the same trap.

And it is not just hindsight - Lenin saw limits of trade unionism long before.
