It's been the topic of a week long debate with people who are lawyers. 
Bottom line, the US will have to write law in order to make anything stick 
on Assange. I've been
following this line of bullshite reasoning for a week.

The easy conviction is for people who signed away their first amendent 
rights like
Manning when he joined the military. He violated that contract.

If you want to claim damage to US national security is against the law, then 
you are
stuck with putting the NYT in jail  An outcome, I would relish.
