[WS:] Such practices were wide spread during the 1950s or 1960s, in Eastern Europe as well. Add to it the routine and wide spread abuse of young men in the compulsory military service. Or British boarding schools ( http://orwell.ru/library/essays/joys/english/e_joys)

What I find interesting, though, is how their existence is rationalized away by blaming former political systems, nazim or communism. Consequently, the problems appear to be confined to a bygone era rather than being a natural outcome of the "surveiller et punir" mentality that is well, alive and kicking.
