Aside from the grotesqueness of this particular case, it is a misuse of language to attach the label "sellout" to a non-deliberate act. There simply is no such thing as "selling out" without intending to. It ought to be reserved for those who fit a line from "The Red Flag": "Though traitors sneer."

An example: a friend of mine said several years ago that he was worried that he'd been enjoying some holiday parties. He wondered if this meant that he was "selling out."
