Nobody in Russia in 1917 thought that Trotsky was a Russian, including Trotsky. By "most people," you mean "Americans and Western Europeans in the late 20th and early 21st century." PS. "everybody who lives in the former USSR" is not "some Stalinists." Maybe you should ask Kagarlitsky about this. I don't think you would like his answer.
