It must be said that in an earlier period, this was not necessarily an unrealistic goal for many US workers. Many people did after all pack up and go West to homestead on a farm, even if that wasn't feasible for a majority of workers.

It's not just that - it's a longstanding fantasy of the American working class (one I've managed to achieve for myself, more or less, I must confess, making me, gasp, petty bourgeois!) to escape from the working class by becoming self-employed or a small businessperson. The classic book whose authors I forget and can't look up because I'm on a deadline writing up this morning's (not horrible) employment report, The American Perception of Class, shows this going back a long way.
