Within the context of the present day, being able to describe a socialist system as an alternative to a capitalist system to our social contacts is essential. What else are we going to talk about? And the 'public' attitude about 'socialism' could gauge our efforts, and guide improvement to our rhetoric of persuasion.
It's also important that the rhetoric is delivered by 'one of them'.
