Really? I've never heard anyone say we need more socialism in this country and mean fire stations. Or hear a fireman take personal umbrage at hearing socialism disparaged. I guess public discourse is different near you.
I should also point out that the good of libraries and fire stations is uncontentious. So even if people did talk like this in the public square, it wouldn't be entering a fray. It would be saying we are a warm puppy.
