For the petty bourgeoisie, wages are a cost, not a source of income. They worry about regulations and taxes -- and for the right-wing petty bourgeoisie, liberal/socialist intellectuals who enact regulations and raise taxes for their suspect pet causes, at the expense of the "common person" (still defined in U.S. political culture as the self-earned property owner) -- not wages.
