I grew up there, and recall no socialists in sight. It's an army town first and foremost, and the Redstone Arsenal's Marshall Space Flight Center is also where the moonrockets were built (hence my father's immigration from Northern Ireland). Yet with all the immigrants - especially German (many originally from Nazi scientific stock, like Wehrner von Braun) - there was quite a cosmopolitan culture, even a symphony orchestra.
