At its height, it actually had many distinguished writers contributing to it.

It successor, Masses & Mainstream, sometimes had good stuff too. I have some copies of that magazine from nearly sixty years ago which feature articles from people like W.E.B. Dubois and poetry from Lorraine Hansberry, who was then still a college student.

Michael Gold, for a Stalinist hack, was incredible. One of my favorite writers and some of his best polemics were in the New Masses.
