Isn't the notion of a "Shiite Crescent," especially in the geopolitical (and not confessional) sense, a little overblown? I recall a trustworthy lefty observer of the Middle Eastern scene (I forget precisely whom) recently arguing that the Maliki regime is today anything but a cat's paw of Iran, if ever it was.
