The "left" (and the "right") are products of particular historical states of affairs that exist in certain parts of the globe. Other places with different histories use different political categories. The idea that all movements in the world can be understood as variants of left or right is a modern version of the old idea that all religions are variants of one religion. IMO.

Which, of course, contradicts the old chesnut that the left is weakest in the so-called imperialist nations, because the workers there have all been bought off. In fact, there are many countries where the left as we know it is virtually non-existent, for example in most of Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
