The media has consistently portrayed the Black Panthers as an ultra radical separatist hate movement; this makes it hard to realize the contrary reality that they tried to forge links and, as you say, unite & fight.
Yet, to get away from the black/white picture of 30/60, a lot of the activism of the 60's was carried on by red diaper babie; there was a tradition and history to draw upon.
