As SA (I think) said last time we talked about this, the problems of organising a whole economy are totally different from those involved in managing public production in a generally capitalist economy.

I think SA is completely right that socialism means Soviet Russia by default in the public imagination and it is ridiculous to not think or talk about the nuts and bolts of socialist economic organisation. You don't have to think you're actually designing a future society - almost every book on the topic has the obligatory reference to the 'cookshops of the future' in its preface - the point is to establish that alternatives are conceivable and to acknowledge what's obvious to everyone, that it's a pretty complicated problem with historical failures.
