If you read Hawking's book "A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang
to Black Holes" (1988) you will read why Hawking and Penrose reject the
idea of the Universe beginning with a Big Bang singularity.
Maybe this is what Shane is referring to?
Hawking has more than once publicly claimed he wished he had never
proposed the idea of a singularity as the beginning of the universe.
