It's not really tearing apart U.S. leftists. You could fit the adherents to the MR view on Iran into a phone booth, if such a thing still existed.
There is a political angle to this, though. Somewhere along the way, much of MR seemed to despair of the possibilities for political action in the First World and began living vicariously through Third World revolutions. Somehow the government of Iran got bent to fit the revolutionary model, despite its anti-communist past and neoliberal present. Sad.
