I think we're overlooking a significant portion of people's experience with
sports - the concept that sport is a spectator experience that you enjoy in
a stadium seems very middle class. Of all the people watching a particular
game (including tv and radio) very few are standing for the national
anthem. Furthermore, the majority of many people's experiences with sports
has been through playing them in their neighborhoods. Go to a park where
people play pick-up basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, or flag/touch
football and see if any national anthem is so much as uttered. Further
still, you will likely notice that a diversity of ages, skill levels, etc
are welcome to play and that the talents of opponents are overtly
appreciated. I should know, I'm a terrible basketball player but I'm still
get to play.

Put it this way. Don't stand for the National Anthem at an NFL or MLB game,
and see the kind of reaction you get.
