Well, the impresario, even a public one, does have nonmusical interests. That is why musicians organize. But I don't think Mahler was "ripped off" by having to "convert" to Papism in order to qualify as director of the Wiener Staatsöper any more than Henri IV was "ripped off" when he made the same conversion.
