The data applies to the past, and a future socialist revolution will need to address itself to its present and future.
One of the actually radical things about socialism is its trust in the democratic process of creating the kind of world we want to live in. That world is not the product of a recipe but of a process of communication, problem solving, and close attention to present reality. It is only by means of that process that socialist revolution can succeed; otherwise, it is doomed.
This is not a 19th century platitude.
...which is not to say that we have nothing to learn from previous socialist projects.
