My scientist friend says:

"Bioremedation is quite real and will in fact be the major factor ultimately

There are, however, all sorts of consequences to that. The beasties that eat oil contain a lot of the oil within themselves. When they get eaten it impacts the food chain all the way up The beasties that eat oil consume oxygen in the water column and can creat dead zones. (which might be preferable to the above) There has never been this much oil dilivered INTO the water column. Being so deep most of the oil is getting emulsified into the water rather than floating on the surface where things can evaporate or can photo-react....different beasties are likely at work.

The earth will surely recover, the questions are how long at what cost to the ecostructure human and otherwise.

Anyway who says they know is lying or a fool. Scientists who study these things will surely benefit since there has not been any event like it, but I suspect they'd prefer they did not."
