Afghanistan is the keystone in the arch from Palestine to Pakistan - and 
apparently the battleground where the control of Pakistan will be decided. US 
planners are really worried about the latter - 2/3 the population of the US, and 
a larger army, with nuclear weapons. It's a potential major roadblock to US 
control of the region's energy resources. Pakistan has just rejected US 
government demands that it not import natural gas from Iran.
